Structural Steel Painter

Job Description:

Operate spray painting equipment to apply protective coatings and paints to fabricated skids and structural steel materials.


  1. Select the appropriate paint or mix paints according to a pre-determined formula.
  2. Fill dents or otherwise prepare material to required specifications for application of paint and or other protective coatings.
  3. Operate spray, dip or flow coating equipment or other painting or product coating equipment as required.
  4. Paint items and apply touch-ups.
  5. Ordering and receiving of paint shop materials, and track paint inventory and issue paint as used on jobs.
  6. Clean and maintain paint shop, painting and coating, ventilation, compressed air and personal protective equipment.
  7. Prepare and apply stencils, computer generated decals and barcodes on the finished products.
  8. Perform necessary quality tests and prepare necessary reports to conform with customer QAQC requirements.
  9. Miscellaneous material handling, masking, and crating as required.
  10. Notifying all necessary departments on completion of project.
  11. Assist sandblaster in the event that the paint shop is waiting on required sandblasted material.
  12. Sandblasting as required.
  13. Other tasks as required.

Skills and Abilities

Must know how to select appropriate paint or mix paints. Operate equipment to spray or coat. Prepare and apply stencils, decals and computer generated barcodes.

Must able to read specifications, Reading text, Document use, Numeracy, Writing and Oral Communication, Working with others, Problem Solving, Critical Thinking, Job task planning and organizing, Significant use of memory, Finding information and continuous learning.

To be successful, Painters need:

  • to be in good physical condition
  • a mechanical aptitude
  • strength, stamina and the use of proper lifting techniques required to handle heavy tools and parts weighing up to 25 kilograms;
  • eye-hand coordination, spatial and form perception, good eyesight and manual dexterity
  • the ability to visualize a finished product from a drawing
  • a good background in practical mathematics, geometry and blueprint reading
  • the ability to stand for long periods, do some moderately heavy lifting and carrying in a noisy place
  • patience, dependability and accuracy
  • the ability to work in a shop environment or outside as needed
  • must be able to pass a pre-employment drug and alcohol test
